Meiji period (1868-1912), incised "Takao zo" (made by Takao) on underside, Osaka company, the Meiji period was the golden age for bronze decorative arts in Japan and large finely carved bronze sculptures of animals in particular were in vogue, this lion has stunning features such as the soft voluminous mane, the detailed feet with fur and claws as well as soft pads on the reverse, his body is strong and he stands in a powerful position with his mouth open baring his teeth and eyes focused at the viewer.
