The first with Gorham trademarks and further marked "49 / Coin / H," hand-chased grapevine decoration with strapwork style cartouche surrounding the period engraving "J. V. P. / from / E. F. R." (5.1 troy oz., 4.75 in.) (good estate condition); the second with Gorham trademarks and numbered 106, engraved on the underside "R. Rait / N.Y.," engine turned decoration to cylindrical body and featuring an open cartouche (5.1 troy oz., 3.5 in.) Keith and Caroline Gray were passionate about antiques, art, and history. Together they attended antique shows and auctions for decades – assembling a collection particularly strong on American coin silver, Asian art, historical documents, early images, and English ceramics. Both were longtime supporters of the Mint Museum in Charlotte, with Caroline serving in multiple capacities from docent to a member of the acquisitions board and trustee. Caroline translated her love of material culture into a successful career, becoming a certified property appraiser in Charlotte.
