Meiji period (1868-1912), signed with red seal on underside, finely rendered playful Japanese shishi dogs with curls and a creamy finely crackled glaze, detailed color to their mouths and noses and expressive eyes, both dogs have their hind legs raised to scratch their ears, sitting relaxed.

Keida Masataro (1852-1924) succeeded his uncle at the Keida kiln in 1894 improving the quality of Satsuma ceramic wares. His works were so fine that they were exhibited in the 1904 Saint Louis Exposition.
