A Tibetan Thangka of the Buddha Shakyamuni

17th century or earlier, pigments on cloth, the Buddha Shakyamuni is seated with his right hand in the mudra of touching the earth, his left hand rests palm up in his lap in meditation holding a black beggar's bowl, his feet are crossed in his lap, he gazes forward towards the viewer, his hair is arranged with the traditional knot of knowledge with a single gold adornment at the pinnacle, his red and orange patchwork robes are from discarded cloth, he sits on a cloud lotus form throne from which a rainbow aureole raises around encircling him, there is a dark green halo around his head with golden rays, there are offerings below the throne along with two guardian Buddhist deities, above Shakyamuni's head are three Buddhist deities, presented unmounted.

Similar to a 16th century thangka of the Buddha Shakyamuni in the Rubin Museum of Art's collection, Accession #: F1997.1.5.

Some loss of pigments; dirt to surface; some discoloration; tape marks and possible repairs to cloth on reverse.
