Richard Berry Harrison was a renowned African American theater actor in the late 19th- and early 20th-century. Harrison's parents escaped slavery via the Underground Railroad, and their love of dramatic theater influenced Harrison early. His mother named him Richard after seeing Shakespeare's Richard III, and he went on to perform in a number of Shakespearean performances. His accolades include a successful role as "de Lawd" in the Broadway performance Green Pastures, a Pulitzer Prize for this role, several teaching positions (including at least one in North Carolina), and a feature on the cover of TIME Magazine in 1935.

Several small nicks; small loss upper left corner (retained with photograph); photograph loose from the mount.
