A Pair of Korean Paintings
Lot Details & Additional Photographs
Joeson dynasty (1392-1910), 18th or 19th century, ink and colors on paper, depicts the ideal world of immortals featuring the Guardian kings and other deities descending towards the earth on clouds, a blend of Buddhist and Confucian iconography, very similar to Chinese Qing dynasty paintings of same period with similar stylized clouds and dress, but figures here are featured without halos and their facial style and lack of color to the clouds are closer to the Korean tradition, possibly part of a larger grouping, framed identically under glass, not examined outside of the frame.
