Probably French, late 19th century, ivory knob unscrews to a compartment holding a knife and fork housed within a rosewood case, intricately carved ivory over copper band above a burled shaft, ebonized ferrule. Picnic canes became popular toward the end of the 19th century both as a fashion accessory and a means of conveying portable implements.
