Born in Russellville, Kentucky, Roberta McClean graduated from the Logan Female College and then went on to study at the Art Students League in New York and with William Merritt Chase at the New York School of Art. Following her studies in the city, she returned to Kentucky where she maintained a studio in Louisville. She exhibited throughout the Southeast and was included in the 1934 Salon of Independent Artists in New York.
