A Tibetan Thangka of Shakyamuni Buddha

19th or 20th century, distemper on cloth, the Buddha is featured in the center of the painting seated on a lotus throne and dressed in red robes decorated with gilt floral motifs, one hand is in the bhumisparsha mudra and the other is holding an alms bowl, he has a double halo behind him with golden rays, he is surrounded by a myriad of Buddhist deities including his two principal disciples Sariputra and Mahamaudgalyayana, and the sixteen arhats, as well as others floating on clouds and positioned on the green grassy plain below, framed with mat under glass.

SS 20.5 x 13.25 in., DOA 26.5 x 19.25 in.

Some loss to pigments; secured to backing in multiple spots to edges of painting.
