Meiji period (1868-1912), a large and impressively complete butsudan, with black and tortoiseshell lacquer doors, fabric veiled reticulated interior doors, interior set with ornately carved and gilded woodwork, finely articulated details especially to interior ceiling, the gilt hardware of the butsudan has motifs of chrysanthemums, lotuses, vines, and dharmachakra wheels, there are three areas on base with pull-out platforms and hidden drawers, an outstanding example of Japanese Meiji period craftsmanship and devotional reverence.

Warping to exterior doors; with shrinkage cracks to three panels and sides of case; interior with rubbing to gilding; fabric to interior of hinged doors with tears and losses; three spindles with losses; minor losses to edges of carvings; small chip to interior lacquered surface; lower central hinged door with looseness to panel and small chip; interior sliding shelf with looseness to panel; other imperfections.
