Born in Billings, Montana, Bert Carpenter studied at Stanford University, Chouinard Art Institute in Los Angeles, and Columbia University. In 1964, he accepted a position at UNC-Greensboro where he was head of the art department. In 1974 he transitioned to director of the Weatherspoon Art Gallery, a position he held until his retirement in 1989. In addition to profoundly shaping and nurturing the university's art programs, he was an artist himself and exhibited extensively throughout the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s.
