Hailing from an old and well-respected Upperville, Virginia family, Lucien Powell served with the Confederate Army from 1863 until 1865. After the war he studied with Thomas Moran at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts before traveling to London, Paris, Rome and Venice to continue his training. Settling with his family in Washington, D. C. by 1885, Powell's paintings were sought after by many collectors in the Washington, D. C. area including Senator John B. Henderson of Missouri and J. Edgar Hoover.
