Chinese scholars did not go out into nature, but studied and meditated on items in their studios, such as rocks, which represented a microcosm of the universe. The rocks were often found in remote places, the finest coming from riverbeds or mountains with special features such as color tones, texture, or appearing like miniature mountains or other elements in nature.
