Likely German, 20th century, impressed STAINER on the back below the heel and stamped STAINER in ink inside where a maker's label would usually be placed; the chin rest and tail piece appear to be later.

This instrument should be playable with a bridge, new strings and a replacement tuning peg (the G-string tuner is lacking); some finish losses to the top; painted numbers on the lower bout; a line of paint marks a fingerboard position while some ID numbers are painted on the lower bout.
