Born in northeastern France, Christian Schussele emigrated to the United States in the mid-19th century. In 1868, he was elected the chair of drawing and painting at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. His paintings are in many prominent collections including the Pennsylvania Academy, the Cooper Union in New York, and the National Portrait Gallery in Washington, D.C.

Yellowing varnish; stable craquelure; some over-cleaning; scattered spots of grime; scattered touch-ups visible under UV light.
