A Rare Pair of Burmese Carved and Painted Wooden Monks

19th century, each monk is finely carved from a single tree trunk, lacquered and then painted in white, unusually rare for most Burmese sculptures are painted in gilt, these monks have a more realistic detail and a presence, their drapery is embellished with small colored glass pieces, their hands together in prayer, their posture lower with feet crossed in the back, exceptional sacred sculptures.

Repair to back of of one figure; a repair to the arm of the other figure; craquelure to painted areas and loss revealing lacquered wood beneath; some repainting; some loss to inlay on robes; some stress cracks to wood; felt circles to underside of each.
