Robert Bergman is a portrait photographer who captures images of his subjects on the streets of Chicago, New York, Detroit, Cleveland, and Pittsburgh. His photography is not spontaneous or candid; rather, Bergman asks the people he meets for permission to photograph them, and takes time with each sitter during photographic sessions. He has been compared to the Old Masters, as his powerful and thoughtful portraiture often has a painted quality.

Bergman has been the subject of several solo exhibitions, including Robert Bergman: Portraits, 1986–1995 at the National Gallery of Art, D.C.
