Painter and art teacher Wilder M. Darling had successful careers in Holland as well as his native Toledo, Ohio, where he later returned to live and practice. He first went to Europe at the age of nineteen to practice with several painters in Munich and Paris. Upon moving to Holland, he quickly settled into the life there that focused on simplicity and domestic pleasures. This influenced his work, as he painted many genre scenes – typical to Dutch tradition – and used Dutch families as models. Darling later returned to Toledo, Ohio where he continued practicing and teaching art in the impressionist, post-impressionist, and modernist styles and earned the moniker “the Dean of Toledo painters.”
