Dickens, Charles. Oliver Twist; Or, The Parish Boy's Progress, First Edition
Lot Details & Additional Photographs
(London: Richard Bentley,1838), three volumes, duodecimo (8 x 5 in.), early Victorian three-quarter leather boards, the spines with gilt and slightly raised bands, marbled endpapers, illustrated with three frontispieces and 21 plates by George Cruikshank; Vol. I, 331 pages; Vol. II, 307 pages., Vol. III, 315 pages; this is the First Issue with authorship credited to "Boz" rather than Dickens and the soon-to-be rejected "Fireside" plate still present in Volume III. Within days, subsequent issues openly named Charles Dickens as the author and the "Fireside" plate was no more.

Wear to boards, some turned page corners, moderate foxing to plates; Volume I with top hinge split upward from middle to edge, chip on lower spine, all nine plates and 331 pages present; Volume II with all seven plates and 307 pages present; Volume III with all seven plates and 315 pages present, though leaf with pages 95/6 has a one inch tear extending inward from the edge without marring text.
