Early 20th century, a large storage trunk, with cover, raised on six stylized legs, lacquered in red with decoration of bamboo and peony blossoms in gilt and black, with three different Japanese family crests to the sides, incised metal hardware to edges and legs, the trunk is tied with a thick braided rope of now faded color with elaborate knot at the top, karabitsu have been used in Japan since the Nara period, first in temples and shrines for precious objects, and then in the home of nobles as an elegant way to store their possessions and to protect them from the humidity of the climate.
