Born in Holland, William Machen immigrated to the United States in 1847. Primarily self-taught, Machen is best known for his still life and hunt trophy paintings. He exhibited his work at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, the 1876 Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia, and the Detroit Institute of Art.

Yellowing varnish and surface grime; pin hole in upper rabbit foot; several repaired tears to center of canvas; minor scattered re-touch visible under UV light; loss and restoration to frame.
