Two Chinese Export Black and Gilt Lacquered Boxes

Mid 19th century; the first of rectangular form with scalloped sides, the hinged lid opens to reveal a lift out tray, raised on winged dragon feet, the exterior painted with elaborate figural vignettes amidst floral and butterfly decoration (5 x 12 x 5.5 in.) (some cracking to lacquer and rubbing to interior edges); the second of rectangular form with domed hinged cover, the exterior with painted figural scenes and dragons (4 x 10.5 x 4 in.) (some rubbing to gilt, some minor chipping to exterior).

The more ornate box was purchased from Jack Patla Company, Charleston, South Carolina.
