Cathy Gropper, born in Cleveland, Ohio studied painting and drawing under Larry Rivers, Jane Wilson, Elaine de Kooning, and Milton Resnick. After NYU, she earned her MA from Columbia University.

Gropper's paintings are in the Nathan Cummings and Myerhoff and Nathan Goldman collections. Mr . George Kaufman of the Whitney Museum Board of Directors was one of the early collectors of Gropper's abstract welded sculpture .
