Jan uses the ancient technique of pate de vere, which involves using powdered glass and tamping it into a mold, creating a deep layer of variances and qualities not found in other methods of glassmaking. Regarding her subject matter, Jan says "When I began, I chose to explore the power of the female form. Slight shifts within a figure determine great differences in a mood or expression. I pare down shapes and exaggerate isolated elements, begging an emotional connection, reaction from the viewer."
