Jean-Paul Louis Martin began his art studies with Victor Chavet. He would travel the countryside in a horse-drawn carriage, painting the landscape and scenes of daily life in rural France. He later studied in Paris under the tuturage of Hector Hanoteau and Paul-Joseph Blanc. Best known for his landscapes of the Nièvre region of France, Martin exhibited often in numerous salons and exhibitions throughout his lifetime.
