John Menapace was born in Mt. Carmel, Pennsylvania and after attending Yale University, began his career as a graphic designer for the Oxford University Press. He later moved to Durham, North Carolina for the position as Director of Design and Production at Duke University Press. Menapace's work is greatly influenced by Eugene Atget, Ansel Adams, and Minor White, and through his success as an artist he went on to influence other photographers, including Elizabeth Matheson and Caroline Vaughan.
