Nakayama drew inspiration for his vibrant horse or ema prints from his early travels to Turkey, India, Greece, and Italy, and from the Indian and Persian miniatures paintings of the 14th through 17th century. Nakayama's prints are very complicated, a long labor intensive process he did for many decades entirely on his own, from conception of drawing the basic design, tracing the colors onto the woodblocks, carving the blocks, and finally printing the images. The result was that he only created one or two print designs a year.

Light toning to paper.
