Jean-Baptiste Debret, distant cousin of famed painter Jacques-Louis David, was a French artist who spent many years working in Brazil. During his time there, he immersed himself in Brazilian culture, completing commissioned portraits for the Portuguese court in exile and also studying the Brazilian people, painting scenes of their everyday life. This culminated with Debret's volumes of engravings, Voyage pittoresque et historique au Brésil..., which were unfortunately unsuccessful commercially. Debret then returned to France and created lithographs after his cousin David's paintings as a means to support himself.

Some light cockling, toning, and few foxing marks; not examined out of frames.
