Oil on board, signed at lower right and lower left, inscribed with title and artist's name and Philadelphia address (4130 Parkside) to verso, presented in a period gold painted frame.

Mabel Pugh graduated in 1913 from Peace College in Raleigh, North Carolina. She continued her studies at Columbia University in New York and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia. This painting dates from her time in Philadelphia, circa 1919.

Pugh moved to New York City in the 1920s in order to find work as an artist and illustrator. By 1933 she was settled in hometown of Morrisville, North Carolina. She accepted a teaching position at Peace College, retiring in 1960.

Two cardboard "battens" affixed vertically to verso to stabilize original cardboard with split and warping; surface bloom and grime. Overall in poor condition.
