Born in the county of Durham, James Andrew McColvin apprenticed to a jeweler in Newcastle as a young man. After marrying in 1889, he turned to painting and is best known for his depictions of young woman. His work may be found in the National Trust and Haworth Art Gallery.

Minor craquelure and some light over-cleaning; overall in good estate condition.
