Important Lawrence Howard, Roothead Goose
Lot Details & Additional Photographs
Lawrence Howard (1891-1975), Ocracoke, NC. This masterwork by Lawrence Howard is rare and important. Lawrence Howard is arguably the finest decoy carver to come off of Ocracoke Island. Surviving root head decoys are rare and geese are the most difficult to find. Most existing Ocracoke geese decoys are actually repainted brant. This example has always been hunted as a goose. It was rigged as both a floater and a stake up. It is oversized and has very appealing early gunning paint. You may never see a finer example come to market.
