18th century, pigments and gilt on cloth, one of the sixteen arhats louhans, probably Chudapanthaka or Nagasena, seated on a pillow with his shoes off and perched on a rock in front of him, his hands together in his lap in meditation, a blue halo surrounds his head, a banana leaf is wrapped over his head and his face is very meticulously painted with a serious expression and facial features, two devotees are in the lower left corner, below the arhat a monkey offers him a peach, two more monkeys swing from the branches in the peach tree above the arhat, a lama seated on deer skin is pictured in the upper left corner, all set amid a verdant landscape with a stream running in the foreground, framed with gilt art nouveau frame and silk mat, with Closson's Cincinnati label to reverse.

Scattered areas of paint loss with some retouching; areas of staining; laid down to board.
