Originally from New York, John Cuthbert Hare studied at the Pratt Institute and the Arts Students League of New York. After several years working as a commercial artist, Hare devoted himself to painting full time. He and his wife split their time between St. Augustine and Palm Beach in Florida and Amherst and Gloucester, Massachusetts.
