Elmer Crowell (1862-1952), East Harwich, Massachusetts. Elmer Crowell is considered the father of American bird carving. This oversized black duck was made around 1915 for his friend, Clem Mayo. The Mayo Duck Farm in Orleans is probably the one you knew nothing about. This legendary duck farm got its start through the vision of Walter Mayo of East Orleans, Massachusetts. It has 45 degree turned head to the right, an oval brand, and Mayo`s personal brand CM. This exact decoy was published in Decoy Magazine, Summer 1984 edition, page 21. It was last offered for public sale at the Doyle Auction spring of 1984.
