From the Estate of the late Joseph D. Rowand, Chapel Hill, North Carolina Joe Rowand was instrumental in developing a contemporary art scene in North Carolina. After studying in New York City at Parsons, he brought the big city art feel to Chapel Hill, North Carolina when he opened Somerhill Gallery in 1972. His gallery served as an epicenter for collectors and artists to gather and grow for over thirty years.

Born in New York, Norman "Norm" Schulman studied interior architecture and design at Parsons after serving in the Army. He was a respected ceramics artist and teacher. After earning his MFA in the ceramics program at Alfred University, he went on to teach at the Toledo Museum School of Art in Ohio, the Rhode Island School of Design in Providence. After a brief stint as head of ceramics at Ohio State University, Schulman settled permanently in Penland, North Carolina. He remained an instructor at Penland School of Crafts and lectured widely throughout the country. His works are in prominent collections including the Museum of Arts & Design in New York, the Mint Museum in North Carolina, the Asheville Art Museum in North Carolina, the Smithsonian's Renwick Gallery in Washington, D.C., and others.
