This mantel once belonged to the Kitzmiller Estate in Johnson, Tennessse. The Greek revival mansion on 317 acres, was built by David Kitzmiller in 1828, and later sold to James Gray in 1850. There were hand-built mantels around a fireplace in each of the 16 rooms. Gray was a veteran of the civil war, and served under Lee when he was 14 years old. A 1962 newspaper article from the Johnson City Press-Chronicle regarding the Kitzmiller estate accompanies this lot.

As found condition; old surface with some wear and scraping; small area of reeded trim loss to upper right corner.
