Nelson Cook was born in Saratoga County, New York. Both his father and an older brother were furniture makers and it is believed that Nelson may have developed his painting skills decorating their work.

Cook left New York for Canada in the early 1830s. He earned a living as an itinerant painter and business agent for his brother. In 1834, Cook was included in the first exhibition sponsored by The Society of Artists and Amateurs of Toronto. This brought him to the attention of Toronto society and earned him many portrait commissions.

By 1840, Nelson Cook was back in New York. He continued to paint portraits and other commissions throughout the state, most notably in Rochester, Saratoga Springs, Buffalo, and Rome.

Painting has been restored: repaired tear at right and puncture at center with associated retouch; canvas restretched; some light craquelure; expected age to frame.
