A Chinese Bronze and Jade Hand Mirror
Lot Details & Additional Photographs
Qing dynasty (1644-1912), 19th century, round mirror with bronze cover cast with raised decoration of the Eight Treasure motifs and inset with eight stones and white jade carved as a Double Happiness motif, white jade belt hook set as handle, connected to mirror with longevity symbols.

7 7/8 in., diameter 4 1/8 in.

The many Chinese auspicious symbols representing happiness and longevity that decorate this mirror together with the inset precious stones and white jade carvings suggest that this mirror may have been presented as a wedding gift probably for inclusion in a dressing table set for the new bride. The bronze cover also includes the Chinese Eight Treasure emblems, baji xiang, consisting of a parasol, conch shell, vase and cover, banner, wheel of life, pair of fish, endless knot, and lotus, indicating that this mirror would have been crafted for presentation to someone who knew and appreciated the importance of these symbols in Chinese culture.

Jade belt hook has break with loss to center; mirror is slightly loose in mount; some bending to longevity symbols by top of handle; some rubbing with wear to bronze handle to top and bottom, also around the interior rim surrounding mirror.
