Louis zur Megede was born in Prussia in 1821. He immigrated to the United States in the late 1840s and settled in Missouri. He was a successful silversmith, with multiple shops in Missouri and Kansas. Examples of his work are relatively rare to find on the market.

Jane Briscoe, known as "Nettie," was born in 1806 at her father's farm "Dry Run," between Georgetown and Lexington, Kentucky. She was the daughter of James Mackal Briscoe and Mary Ann Bruner, originally of Frederick County, Maryland. They moved to Kentucky following their marriage in 1801 and settled at "Dry Run," between Lexington and Georgetown. Jane never married and in the 1880 census, she is listed as living with her sister and brother-in-law, Thomas Bates Wallace and Lucy Wallace, in Lexington, Missouri.
