Van Buren Caroon was born and raised in Poplar Branch and began market hunting at a very early age. He worked with Pat O'Neal once market hunting ceased as he was an accomplished maker of skiffs. Family members recall that Van and Pat O'Neal built the wildlife enforcement officers their 25' tunnel boats which allowed them to navigate the shallow waters of the sound.
