Carved and polished white marble, incised signature and dated 1974. Included with the artwork is a Gallery press release from the artist's solo exhibition Power in Marble at The Hait Gallery, New Jersey.

Eugene began to learn his trade at age 13 as a stone cutter in Italy and Switzerland. After moving to the United States in 1927, he worked as an instructor at the Newark School of Fine and Industrial Arts, as well as other private schools. Gauss's artwork focuses on the figure, in a range of sculpture media including marble, stone, terracotta, bronze, and hammered lead. In addition to his sculptural works, he has also exhibited figural drawings and pastel works on paper at prestigious venues such as the Pennsylvania Academy, Philadelphia Museum, and the National Academy. His work is in private collections throughout the United States and internationally.
