Collection of a North Carolina Gentleman

Dr. J. Fred Saunders is a native of Aulander, North Carolina in Bertie County. He attended undergraduate and medical school at UNC-Chapel Hill. After serving in the army during the Korean Conflict, he returned to eastern North Carolina and practiced family medicine until his retirement in 2004.

An artist from a young age, Saunders started painting seriously in watercolors in the 1970s. Since 2001 he has painted primarily in oils, focusing on the rural and maritime landscapes of Eastern North Carolina and Virginia.

Saunders' work was recently included in an 2019 exhibition at the Blount-Bridgers House in Tarboro.
