Circa 1820, tan calfskin with wide lid, strap with closure clasp marked "W. Turner," written in ink script on the strap and stamped in stencil on the underside of the case, "A. Robertson / Charleston / SC," and fabric lined interior, storing an antique black beaver top hat marked by London hatmaker Robert Heath to interior.

MESDA archives documents William Turner as a Baltimore trunk maker circa 1819-1821. A. Robertson is listed as a merchant on King Street, in Charleston in the 1803 and 1806 directories. Robert Heath was a London based hat maker located on St. Georges Place near Wilton Place, Hyde Park Corner, established in 1849.

Case with discoloration and some separation; interior fabric fragmenting; hat very worn with some tears and surface staining.
