George Waterfield (NC, 1885-1926), Published Ruddy Duck
Lot Details & Additional Photographs
Knotts Island, North Carolina, published on page 100 of Gunnin' Birds by Kroghie Andresen. Kroghie writes about this bird, "The carvings, like this ruddy by George Waterfield from Knotts Island, are the most attractive of the small elongated tail construction type decoys that were popular around the turn of the century. The head design and body variance is far superior to Pleele Ballance, Walter Beasley, and other carvers, He tragically died at an early age but made decoys for his own market hunting stand. The more well made angular heads distinguish the George Waterfield decoys."

Length 12 in.

From the Personal Collection of Philip and Susan Harvey

This decoy is perhaps George Waterfield's most important work.

Old gunning paint; light age checking in the body.
