Late 19th century or early 20th century, with hinged top with metal key lock (key missing), opens to reveal on the lid six paper holders flanking a central hinged compartment, below is a writing area that folds outwards, lined with red velvet, two bottom sections lift up to reveal storage areas beneath, exterior is decorated with scenic landscapes of Japanese seaside villages.

Extensive scratches over the surface; interior lacquered wood is warped and cracking; exterior lacquer has flaking and loss around the edges; the key to lock is missing; box lid does not close fully due to warping of interior wood.
