Bruce Mitchell was born in Scotland but spent most of his life in Pennsylvania. He was a jazz musician and enjoyed painting musicians as they performed. In the 1930s he painted several murals for US post offices. During WWII he served as an artist war correspondent for LIFE magazine. Following the war, he taught at Bucknell University in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania.
