Civil War Era U. S. Model 1850 Foot Officer's Sword
Lot Details & Additional Photographs
Maker unknown but "New York" still visible on the ricasso to left, both sides of the blade carry identical patriotic motifs being crossed flags above "The Union Forever," an eagle with a streamer reading E PLURIBUS UNUM, and a liberty cap; the hilt consists a pierced gilt brass guard and pommel, its wooden grip wrapped in ray skin secured with brass wire; the sword in an iron scabbard having one suspension ring as made. The cord is a modern addition.

39-1/2 in. with scabbard

Private North Carolina Collection

The blade's etching, though worn, is plainly visible and evokes the patriotic fever raging through the northern states.

The sword's guard is somewhat loose; most of the ray skin is worn off the grip; wear to blade obscures maker's or retailer's name; light oxidation to the scabbard.
