Turned and hand carved figured cherry, underside with incised "VAL" monogram signature and dated 1956, urn form with scrolled double handles, obverse and reverse with carved bas relief narrative scenes, one side depicting a shepherding scene, the other depicting Jesus and two lions, above a carved foliate basin and round turned foot.

Native to Winston-Salem, North Carolina, African American artist Vester Amos Lowe was known for his skilled figural wood carvings in the American Folk Art tradition, blending both African and European Art traditions as seen in this urn. The artist has exhibited regionally and has been featured in Folk Art Magazine.

Some vertical cracks from rim downward, otherwise good estate condition.
