Patrick Heron was an abstract British painter, printmaker, and designer who was a leading artist of his generation. He spent his early years in Cornwall, England, and he began designing silk scarves for his father's company at the age of 14. Heron later moved to London to attend the Slade School of Fine Art before retuning to Cornwall, where he became a key member of the St. Ives School of artists. In Heron's abstract work, he questioned established notions of space and aimed to blur the lines between foreground and background, giving equal significance to both. The Tate Britain hosted a major retrospective exhibition of Heron's work in 1998.
