Conk O'Neal was the son of Ben O'Neal, the famous market hunter and guide from Ocracoke. Around the turn of the century, Ben made a lot of roothead brant and geese for his market hunting stand. Conk recalled that the family burned most of these decoys in the wood stove during the Second World War to keep warm.
